* Restricted Use Pesticides make up approximately a quarter of total pesticides used in agriculture. Due to the toxicity characteristics of RUP's, EPA requires that RUPs are applied only by or under the direct supervision of trained and certified applicators.
EPA classifies pesticides into two categories: general use pesticides and restricted use pesticides. Roundup, with its active ingredient, glyphosate, is a general use, not a restricted use pesticide.
On Kaua'i, the four gmo companies on island: Dow, Syngenta, Pioneer, and BASF, account for approximately 18 tons per year of Restricted Use Pesticides, equal to approximately 98% of total agricultural RUP usage.
